New York features 43 ski areas, more than any other state in the US. 10 ski areas would be considered destination resorts. Top destinations include Whiteface, Gore Mountain, Windham, Hunter Mountain and Belleayre. Larger destinations tend to be in the Adirondacks as well as the Catskill Mountains. 5 ski resorts are within a 3 hour or less drive from New York City.

Whiteface Mountain

New York's premier ski resort, Whiteface Mountain boasts the highest vertical drop in the East at 3,430 feet and is ranked as the top ski resort in the Eastern US. The mountain features 90 trails, 288 acres of terrain and off-piste double-black diamond wilderness terrain (The Slides). This is where the world's best come to train and compete and where kids come to learn and have fun. Whiteface is located just outside the village of Lake Placid, one of the best ski towns in the East. A daily shuttle runs between the town and the mountain. The summit offers a 360-degree view of many of the other Adirondack peaks and on a clear day a view all the way to Canada and Vermont. Whiteface hosted the alpine skiing competition of the 1980 Winter Olympics and the area is still a training ground for athletes. In summer Whiteface Mountain offers gondola rides. The average snowfall averages 190 inches per year plus 99% of the mountain trails are serviced by snowmaking. Season 2016-2017 had a record-breaking 281 inches of natural snowfall and 142 days of skiing and riding.

Gore Mountain is a family-oriented ski resort nestled in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. Ski over nine sides of the four peaks - Gore, Bear, Burnt Ridge and Little Gore Mountains. The resort features 2,537 feet of vertical and the most terrain in New York State with 107 trails plus 27 glades, 7 freestyle areas and 11 cross-country/snowshoe loops. It is one of three state-owned ski areas operated by ORDA. Five terrain parks offer a variety of shredding opportunities. The snowmaking system supplied by the Hudson River delivers a long season of quality snow. Off-hill, there are a variety of attractions including cross country skiing, spas, and outdoor centers. In 2014-15 season a new high-speed detachable quad was added for a smoother, faster ride. There are five dining options scattered across the mountain plus a year-round catering service.

Hunter Mountain Ski Area is located in the northern Catskill mountains about 2 hours north of New York City. The resort is comprised of three separate mountains. There are two terrain parks and Hunter holds freestyle events throughout the ski season. Other activities at the mountain include snowshoeing and snow tubing. The snow tubing park is the largest in NYS with nearly 1,000 ft long lanes. Hunter is a four seasons resort with slopeside condominiums and a luxury hotel.

Belleayre Mountain is a State owned and operated ski center located in the Catskill Forest Preserve south west of Albany, NY and just a few hours from New York City. There are 4 separate lodges. The resort offers Area 51 terrain park, two progression parks, mogul trails ranging from intermediate to expert bumps and extensive glade skiing. The longest run is 12,024 feet. Its continued improvements include the installation of the Catskill Thunder Gondola that will have 60 cabins holding up to 8 guests per cabin.

Holiday Valley, located in Ellicottville just one hour south of Buffalo is Western New York's premier destination ski resort. There are three base lodges, two hotels and numerous amenities. The ski resort also serves skiers in the Southern Ontario region. A large variety of terrain including glades, state of the art snowmaking and grooming technology (611 snowguns), ski-in/out lodging and the town combine to create a true destination resort. The Sky High Mountain Coaster located near the Tannenbaum Lodge takes you on a thrilling ride through the woods even in the winter months. Four terrain parks offer lots of features including jumps, rails, and rollers for riders and skiers. 37 trails are lit for night skiing/boarding.

Catamount is located 45 miles south east of Albany. The ski area sits right on the New York and Massachusetts border, with skiing terrain on both the Berkshire Mountains and the Taconic Range. The terrain includes the Berkshires longest run as well as the steepest trail. The lift lines are usually short and trails are uncrowded. The terrain parks offer a mix of jibs, rails, bumps and jumps. More than 98 percent of terrain is covered with snowmaking.
